Gene Lai is an Assistant Professor of Music at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research explores the transnational impact of Indian folk drumming in Singapore and Malaysia, focusing on the uṟumi mēḷam, a Tamil folk ensemble, and Damaru Singapore, a pan-Indian street drumming group. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork across Singapore, Malaysia, and Tamil Nadu, and has published in peer-reviewed journals, including Asian Music, Ethnomusicology Forum, Traditions of Music and Dance (formerly Yearbook for Traditional Music), and the Malaysian Journal of Music.
